Description
This design is based on the remarkable story of a real-life pigeon residing in the Australian War Memorial.
She had constructed her beautiful nest from the poppies left on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It’s a heart-warming story about an industrious pigeon who was observed daily collecting poppies. Eventually, she wove an amazing nest perfectly positioned in front of glorious stained-glass window, and set about incubating her eggs. If you wish, you can view actual photos of this feathered friend with a poppy in her beak and sitting in her incredible nest on the Australian War Memorial website.
The poppies in this brooch have been constructed from two layers of ripple acrylic in crimson red, that shines brightly in the sunlight. Each poppy has an inset black middle with the centre etched and hand painted in green. The pigeon’s body is teal with a lilac chest band. Her beak and wing bands are slate grey. Vanilla has been used to create her beak cere and eye outer. This acrylic is slight thicker than that of her body, so these features are more prominent.
The brooch pin on the back is positioned in a horizonal orientation at the level of the pigeon’s back.
