Southern Boobook Owl

Description

Boobooks are the sweetest little owls.  They live throughout Australia, including in urban areas, so you might be lucky enough to have one living near you!  Go out at night and listen quietly for their distinctive “boo-book” call.

Our brooch is based on a local, real-life Boobook Owl.

Just like the Boobooks in the wild, the brown, swirly acrylic used for the wings varies from pale caramel to dark chocolate in colour, making each brooch truly unique.  This brooch is full of intricate details.  The owl’s tummy feathers and tail are a soft pale brown, while the eye feathers are grey and caramel.  Feathers have been etched and hand-painted with care.  Set against a starlit background made from pearlecent sky-blue, the owl sits perched in a eucalypt tree, with branches cut from real bamboo and leaves in eucalyptus green acrylic.  The yolk-coloured moon mirrors the owl’s striking inset eyes.  The portrait is framed by a gold rim in keeping with the other brooches from our Avian Portrait Series.
