Description
If you visited the beach or travelled to the ocean floor 500 million years ago, it’s quite likely you’d come across a trilobite. With over 20,000 different species in the fossil record, these incredible beasties came in all shapes and sizes.
Why ‘Dudley the Trilobite’? There’s a limestone quarry in the town of Dudley, England, where day trippers would spend the afternoon chipping out trilobites. They were affectionately named the “Dudley Locusts”.
Although it’s not confirmed, there’s a pretty good chance that some trilobites were coloured red. Red light does not reach the ocean depths and this means that red animals actually appear black and can hide from predators and prey. Dudley is made from glittery swirled red acrylic with legs and an underside in swirly baby pink. His black compound eyes are inset. All fine details have been etched.
We said adios to the trilobites during the mass extinction event at the end of the Permian.
