Our happy platypus has fur of hand-mixed, ripple brown acrylic, which will be unique to every brooch. The variation in this acrylic is substantial – on many brooches the ripples are prominent and in others, the acrylic appears quite subtle in ripple variation. Therefore, please be aware that the fur pattern on your brooch may appear a little different to our photos. The platypus bill and webbed feet are made from a matt, slate grey. The accompanying nest is has been constructed from veneered cherry wood, with green acrylic leaf inserts and two darling platypus eggs inside.
Our local river is home to platypus. In the early morning, if you walk quietly and wait patiently, you will quite often catch a glimpse of a platypus or two. It therefore came as quite a surprise to learn that in 2020 there was a push by Australian conservationists to reclassify platypus as a threatened species. We are so fortunate in our tiny pocket of the world! We wanted to celebrate this marvellous monotreme – a furry, milk-feeding yet egg-laying wonder!
